TikTok won’t add end-to-end encryption to direct messages, report says

According to a recent report from the BBC, TikTok has decided against the implementation of end-to-end encryption for its direct messaging feature. The platform's management argues that such encryption could compromise user safety, as it would hinder the ability of law enforcement and safety teams to access messages in critical situations. In a statement to the outlet, TikTok emphasized that this decision is part of their strategy to set themselves apart from competitors while prioritizing the protection of their user base, particularly minors. With end-to-end encryption, only the sender and recipient can access the message content, a feature that TikTok believes could inadvertently put users at risk. Despite foregoing end-to-end encryption, TikTok maintains that its direct messages are safeguarded with standard encryption protocols, akin to those used by platforms like Gmail. The company assures users that only authorized personnel can access direct messages and only under specific conditions, such as legitimate law enforcement inquiries or reports of harmful conduct. End-to-end encryption remains a standard in widely-used messaging applications like Signal, WhatsApp, and Apple’s Messages.
