TikTok’s latest feature lets college students find and connect with classmates

TikTok is stepping into the realm of campus connections with its newly unveiled feature, Campus Verification, aimed at college students. This initiative allows users to enhance their TikTok profiles by adding their college information, facilitating connections with fellow classmates at over 6,000 universities. To utilize this feature, users must go to their profile and select the 'Add school' option. They will then enter their college's name and graduation year. Verification requires the entry of an academic email address to confirm their enrollment, after which the college name and graduation year will be showcased on their profile. Once verified, students can explore a customized page for their school, filter fellow users by graduation year, and see a list of peers who have also identified themselves as part of the same institution. An interesting aspect is the ability to sort users by popularity, highlighting those with the most followers. TikTok's collaboration with UNiDAYS, a platform dedicated to student verification, underpins this feature. The goal is to foster a sense of community and facilitate real-life interactions among students, reminiscent of Facebook's foundational objective when it was first created for Harvard students in 2004. While this feature could enhance networking opportunities among college students, it also brings forth concerns about online privacy, as it may make tracking individuals easier. However, participation is entirely optional, allowing users who wish to maintain a separation between their social media presence and academic life to do so. Interestingly, this launch follows Instagram's exploration of a similar feature last year that would enable users to display their school affiliation and graduation details, although it remains unclear whether that initiative will proceed.
