TikTok now lets users send voice notes and images in DMs

TikTok is enhancing user interaction by introducing new capabilities for direct messaging. As announced to TechCrunch, users can now send voice notes and share up to nine images or videos in both one-on-one and group chats. This strategic move aims to transform TikTok from merely an entertainment platform into a vibrant social environment where users can engage in richer conversations beyond just sharing videos. With the newly added voice note feature, users are able to record and dispatch audio messages lasting up to 60 seconds. This update aligns TikTok's messaging functionality with that of well-established social media platforms like WhatsApp, Instagram, and Apple's Messages, which already support voice messaging. The addition is particularly relevant as younger generations, especially Gen Z, increasingly prefer voice as a means of communication. The rollout of these features is expected to take place over the next few weeks. For photo and video sharing, users can either capture new content directly through the app or select existing media from their camera roll. Before sending, they have the option to edit their content, ensuring it meets their desired standards. To enhance user safety, TikTok has implemented restrictions on initial message requests—users cannot send images or videos when contacting someone for the first time. They are limited to sharing pre-existing TikTok content only. Furthermore, the platform prompts users to be cautious about their privacy when sending photos or videos. For safety measures, direct messaging on TikTok is restricted to users aged 16 and above, with additional protections for those aged 16 to 18. TikTok has incorporated automated systems that detect and block inappropriate images, such as nudity, preventing both the sender and receiver from encountering such content. Users over 18 can opt to adjust these safety settings in their app preferences. Overall, TikTok views these enhancements as a means for users to connect and express themselves in familiar ways. This initiative follows the introduction of group chats last year, which allowed conversations with up to 32 participants. The platform has also launched Creator Chat Rooms, facilitating more direct interactions between creators and their followers.
