TikTok Says It’s Engaging With Indonesia After License Suspended

TikTok has announced that it is actively engaging with Indonesian officials to address a dispute that resulted in the suspension of its operating license in the country. This action came after the platform declined to fully disclose data regarding its live streaming activities during nationwide protests that occurred in August. In a statement released late Friday, TikTok emphasized its commitment to adhering to the laws and regulations of the various markets where it operates. The company is currently working alongside the Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs to resolve the issue while ensuring that user privacy is protected and that the platform remains a safe and responsible space for its Indonesian users. The Indonesian communications ministry revealed that TikTok had not provided complete data on user activity during protests that took place from August 25 to 30, triggered by the tragic death of a delivery driver. Although TikTok did share some information, it fell short of fulfilling the government's full data request. Alexander Sabar, a director general at the ministry, mentioned that TikTok was summoned for clarification on September 16 and was given until September 25 to meet the complete data requirements. In a letter dated September 23, TikTok explained that its internal policies prevented it from fully complying with the request. As a result, the government suspended the company’s operating license, citing a breach of obligations as a private electronic system operator. The duration of the suspension remains unclear, but TikTok is still accessible in Indonesia at this time. During the height of the protests, TikTok temporarily halted its live streaming feature on August 30, resuming it only a few days later when tensions began to subside. This incident underscores the regulatory hurdles faced by the Chinese-owned platform in one of its key markets, particularly as Indonesian authorities intensify their scrutiny of social media and e-commerce businesses. The outcome of TikTok's ongoing discussions with Jakarta is expected to be closely monitored, given Indonesia's significant role in TikTok's growth strategy in Southeast Asia, especially in terms of user engagement and online shopping initiatives.
