In a significant milestone for the platform, Threads has announced it has reached 500 million monthly active users, nearly three years after its launch as a competitor to Twitter, now known as X. This achievement was unveiled by the Meta-owned social media platform on Tuesday, coinciding with the rollout of several new features designed to enhance user experience. One of the standout additions is the "Your Algo" tool, which grants users greater control over their feed. This new feature builds on the earlier "Dear Algo" tool introduced in February, allowing users to express their content preferences. With "Your Algo," users can now privately adjust the types of posts they wish to see more or less of, choosing the duration of these requests for one, three, or seven days, all visible only to them. This enhancement aims to provide a personalized experience that sets Threads apart from its competitors. In addition to the feed customization, Threads is officially launching its "Communities" feature, which was previously in beta. This initiative creates dedicated spaces within the app for users to engage in deeper discussions around specific topics like sports, entertainment, and hobbies. A new "Communities Hub" has been introduced to streamline the discovery of these communities, along with unique icons for each community to enhance visibility. Connor Hayes, head of Instagram, highlighted the importance of facilitating connections within the app, stating, "The Discovery Hub is a way for us to try to get communities in front of more people." He noted that users benefit from quickly finding like-minded individuals, leading to a more fulfilling app experience. Moreover, Threads is expanding its Live Chats feature to more communities, allowing for real-time conversations during events like the FIFA World Cup. Initially launched in April, these Live Chats provide a platform for users to engage in discussions while watching cultural events unfold. By July, all communities will be able to initiate Live Chats, bridging the gap in real-time engagement with competitors like X. Despite its initial challenges in keeping pace with the rapid-fire nature of X, Threads has gradually incorporated essential features such as direct messaging, desktop functionality, and now, this latest suite of tools. The recent growth to 500 million users marks a significant increase, with 100 million new users added over the past 10 months, demonstrating Threads' evolving appeal and commitment to enhancing user interaction.
