Threads is testing a shortcut to quickly start DM conversations

In an effort to streamline user communication, Threads, the social media platform owned by Meta, has begun testing a new shortcut for direct messaging. Announced on Thursday, this feature allows users involved in the testing phase to simply type phrases like "DM me" or "Message me" within a post or comment. This automatically creates a hyperlink that enables others to initiate a private conversation. When users click on the shortcut, they are directed to a one-on-one chat. If both users follow each other, the message lands directly in their primary inbox. However, for those who do not share a mutual follow, the message will be directed to the "Message Requests" folder, helping to minimize unwanted spam. This initiative marks a significant step for Threads as it aims to simplify the process of starting direct messages. Although the platform was initially slow to roll out a native messaging feature, this latest development shows a commitment to making messaging a core aspect of user experience. Currently, the feature is being rolled out to a select group of users in the United States and Canada, but it remains uncertain when or if it will be made available to a broader audience. The DM shortcut is just one of several updates that Threads has introduced recently. Other enhancements include an AI-driven feature that customizes user feeds and the option to share posts directly to Instagram Stories without leaving the app. Additionally, Threads has been experimenting with in-message games, indicating an ongoing evolution of its interactive capabilities. Recent data from market research firm Similarweb reveals that Threads has surpassed X in terms of daily mobile usage, boasting 141.5 million daily active users as of January 7, 2026. In contrast, X recorded 125 million daily active users. Although X continues to lead in web usage, Threads' mobile app for both iOS and Android has shown a steady increase in user engagement over the past months.
