Threads is currently piloting an innovative feature aimed at facilitating the sharing of long-form text on its platform, as confirmed by Meta to TechCrunch on Thursday. This new capability allows users to attach a substantial block of text to their posts, eliminating the need to create multiple threads for more thorough discussions and ideas. The feature, which was first identified by app researcher Radu Oncescu on iOS, enhances the user experience by providing tools for creative text styling. It encourages users to share deeper insights, news snippets, excerpts from books, and other written content. This could be a game-changer for Threads as it aims to attract and retain creators and writers who seek broader distribution for their work, which they might typically publish on personal blogs or platforms like Substack. Previously, users faced challenges when trying to share larger text pieces, often resorting to screenshots from their Notes app. With this new text attachment option, Threads simplifies the process. A recent demonstration by user Robert P. Nickson showcased how the long-form text appears, displayed in a gray box within the original post, allowing viewers to click and scroll through the complete content. In contrast, Threads' competitor, X, already provides a similar long-form sharing feature known as “Articles,” but this option is exclusive to Premium subscribers. Threads, however, is rolling out its feature to all users, though this may change in the future. Currently, Threads focuses solely on text sharing, while X allows the inclusion of images and videos. As the feature is still under testing, there is potential for Threads to incorporate multimedia in the future. Meta has indicated plans to expand this functionality to a broader audience soon. This addition is the latest in a series of enhancements Threads has rolled out over the past year, which also includes direct messaging, fediverse integrations, custom feeds, and AI improvements. Since its launch, Threads has impressively exceeded 400 million monthly active users, although its rival, X, boasts over 600 million, according to previous comments from former CEO Linda Yaccarino.
