In a move aimed at enhancing user engagement, Threads, the social media platform owned by Meta, has unveiled a new feature called "Live Chats." Announced on Wednesday, this functionality allows users to engage in real-time conversations during significant cultural events. The initial launch will focus on the NBA Threads community during the Playoffs, with notable media figures like Malika Andrews, Rachel Nichols, and Da Kid Gowie hosting these chats during games. Threads is beginning this rollout with a select group of creators, meaning not all users will have immediate access to start their own Live Chats. However, Meta has assured that they plan to gradually expand this feature. Participants in these chats can send messages, photos, videos, links, and emoji reactions, with up to 150 users able to actively communicate at once. Once this cap is reached, additional users can still view the discussion, react to messages, and engage in polls in a spectator mode. When Threads was first launched, it struggled to compete with X, particularly in terms of timeliness and relevance. X had already positioned itself as a global hub for real-time commentary and breaking news, while Threads lacked many essential features, such as an effective search function and a chronological feed. Over time, Threads has incorporated these tools and is now introducing features that enhance real-time engagement, setting itself apart from X. Meta described Live Chats as a novel way to cultivate community among users with shared interests, whether it’s during a major album release or a pivotal game. The company stated, "Live Chats are an extension of what’s already happening on Threads — and a new way for creators and fans to connect over what matters to them in real time." Users can join Live Chats easily via the Community feed, through shared posts, or by tapping the red live ring around a host’s profile picture. Although these chats conclude after a set duration, they remain accessible and publicly discoverable afterward. Meta has implemented measures to ensure a safe environment, automatically detecting and removing any messages that violate their policies. Additionally, hosts have moderation tools to manage participants effectively. Looking ahead, Meta plans to enhance Live Chats with new features, including co-hosting options, real-time updates, lock screen widgets to highlight chat activities, and the ability to quote and share messages directly to Threads feeds. While originally aimed at events like album drops, the potential applications for Live Chats are vast, including upcoming FIFA World Cup matches, award shows, and season finales of popular TV series.
