Meta's Instagram Threads is unveiling a highly anticipated feature: direct messaging (DMs). This new capability allows users to communicate directly with one another without the need to switch to Instagram, enhancing the overall user experience. The rollout of DMs is set to begin globally this Tuesday, accompanied by a visual enhancement called 'highlighter,' which aims to spotlight engaging conversations and trending topics. Initially, Threads DMs will offer fundamental functionalities, including one-on-one chats, preset emoji reactions, spam reporting, and the option to mute messages—similar to Instagram's features. However, more advanced options such as group messaging and inbox filters will be introduced in future updates. Currently, users cannot block specific followers from messaging them; blocking on Threads will also block them on Instagram. User control over messaging permissions is dependent on whether they choose to follow the person. Available for users aged 18 and older in most markets, DMs will not be accessible in Japan, Australia, the U.K., and the EU at launch. With the introduction of DMs, Threads positions itself as a competitor to other text-centric social platforms like X and Bluesky, facilitating direct engagement among users. However, unlike X, which is developing encrypted messaging, Threads has opted not to include encryption in its messaging system. Emily Dalton Smith, Threads' VP of Product, emphasized that the focus is on fostering direct connections and community discussions rather than secure messaging. Smith pointed out that Threads is cultivating a distinct community compared to Instagram, with many users building unique interest graphs. Interestingly, over a third of daily Threads users have less than a 50% overlap with their Instagram connections, indicating a divergence in the communities formed on each platform. Threads aims to further explore ways for users to engage without an Instagram account, including testing logins through Facebook and the option of creating stand-alone Threads accounts. The app's creator community is also evolving, with users like David Rushing leading dedicated interest groups, such as the NBA Threads community. To enhance community discovery, Threads has introduced tagging and topic feeds and plans to spotlight active contributors within these groups. The newly implemented highlighter feature intends to draw attention to trending discussions and user perspectives, enriching the conversational landscape on the platform. Currently, Meta has no immediate monetization plans beyond advertising, although there is potential for future AI integrations. The company remains committed to refining its ad offerings while utilizing AI to enhance user experience, such as summarizing trending topics. Despite its impressive 350 million monthly active users, Threads is still establishing its identity within Meta's extensive app ecosystem. Prior to the global launch, DMs were trialed in select markets, including Hong Kong, Thailand, Argentina, and Brazil.
