Instagram's Threads is set to enhance user interaction with the introduction of a highly anticipated feature: direct messaging. Starting Tuesday, users around the world will gain the ability to send messages directly within the app, eliminating the need to switch to Instagram. Alongside this, Threads will also unveil a new visual feature known as 'highlighter' to showcase compelling conversations and trending topics. At launch, the direct messaging (DM) functionality will include essential features such as one-on-one chats, preset emoji reactions, spam reporting, and the option to mute DMs—similar to what users experience on Instagram. However, more advanced capabilities, like group messaging and inbox filters, are expected to be rolled out in future updates. Currently, users cannot block specific followers from messaging them, as blocking a user on Threads also applies to Instagram, emphasizing the interconnectedness of the two platforms. DMs will be accessible in most regions where Threads operates, with the exception of Japan, Australia, the U.K., and the EU. The addition of this messaging feature positions Threads as a more formidable competitor to other text-based social platforms like X and Bluesky, which already allow direct interactions and group chats. Despite the competitive landscape, Threads has no plans to implement encryption for its DMs. Emily Dalton Smith, Threads’ VP of Product, clarified that the focus is on fostering direct connections and real-time discussions rather than on privacy features. "It’s really about just connecting directly and talking to people about whatever is happening now," she explained. Threads is evolving into a social platform that diverges from Instagram, with users developing distinct interest-based networks. Meta revealed that more than a third of daily Threads users have less than a 50% overlap with their Instagram connections, highlighting a shift in user engagement and interests between the two apps. Moreover, Threads is exploring options for users to access the platform without relying on an Instagram account, including logins via Facebook and the potential for Threads-only accounts. The app also plans to enhance community discovery, having already introduced tags and topic feeds to categorize discussions. In the coming months, Threads aims to improve user recommendations and highlight active contributors within various communities. The new highlighter feature will initially focus on trending topics but could evolve to showcase user perspectives and discussions. While Threads is currently focused on perfecting its advertising strategy, there is potential for future AI integration to enhance user experience. With 350 million monthly active users, Threads has established a significant presence in the social media landscape, although it remains under the shadow of Meta’s larger suite of apps. Before this global rollout, the DM feature was tested in select markets, including Hong Kong, Thailand, Argentina, and Brazil, paving the way for the app's ambitious future.
