Threads is nearing X’s daily app users, new data shows

Recent data from market intelligence firm Similarweb reveals that Instagram's Threads is rapidly approaching its main rival, X, in terms of daily mobile app users. As of June 2025, Threads boasted 115.1 million daily active users across iOS and Android, marking an impressive year-over-year growth of 127.8%. In contrast, X reported 132 million daily active users, but experienced a decline in growth of 15.2% over the same period. Meanwhile, the decentralized social network Bluesky has seen a remarkable year-over-year increase of 372.5%, although it still maintains a relatively small user base with just 4.1 million daily active users. Bluesky's growth surged late last year as many users migrated from X in response to changes in ownership and political affiliations associated with Elon Musk and President Trump. However, that initial momentum appears to be waning. In recent months, Bluesky has faced criticism for becoming perceived as a left-leaning echo chamber, which may have diverted some users back to Threads. Despite its potential for long-term growth through its innovative infrastructure, the immediate competition is clearly between Threads and X. The latest mobile app data indicates that Threads could emerge as a formidable challenger to X, potentially capturing a larger share of advertising revenue, which is currently Meta's primary monetization strategy for Threads. However, it's worth noting that X still holds a significant advantage in web traffic, with 145.8 million average daily web visits in June 2025 compared to Threads' mere 6.9 million visits. In the U.S. market, the competition is slightly different. Bluesky attracted 2.4 million average daily web visits from American users in June, surpassing Threads' 985,200 visits. X continues to dominate with 33.1 million average daily web visits in the U.S. On mobile, the battle is much closer, with Threads recording 15.3 million daily active users compared to X's 22.9 million. Bluesky's mobile presence remains modest, with only 1.1 million daily active users. Bluesky's future success may hinge less on short-term spikes in user numbers stemming from dissatisfaction with other platforms and more on its potential to cultivate an open social ecosystem. Users drawn to Bluesky solely as an alternative to X may not remain if their needs aren't met, leading them to return to X or switch to Threads instead. Conversely, those attracted by Bluesky's innovative technology may be more likely to stay engaged in the long run. According to Meta's latest earnings report, Threads has achieved 350 million monthly active users, while X, being a private entity, is no longer obligated to disclose user metrics. Musk previously claimed that X has approximately 600 million monthly active users.
