Instagram is venturing into innovative territory by developing a feature aimed at giving users more control over their Threads feed. This functionality, recently uncovered by reverse engineer Alessandro Paluzzi, was revealed to TechCrunch and is linked to similar algorithm adjustment tools that are also being tested for Instagram. Though Instagram has confirmed that this feature is currently an internal prototype and not available for user testing, the dedicated account @threads.algo is live and has attracted attention from several Meta engineers. According to Paluzzi's discoveries, Threads users could potentially receive a prompt that allows them to tag this account, effectively signaling what content they wish to see more or less of in their feeds. This concept echoes remarks made by Elon Musk regarding X, his social media platform, where he indicated that an upcoming update would enable users to interact with Grok, X’s AI chatbot, to modify their feeds in real time. Musk mentioned that by November, X's algorithm would transition to a purely AI-driven model, promising to open source updates biweekly, allowing dynamic adjustments to the feed just by communicating with Grok. The introduction of this algorithm-configuration feature aligns with Instagram's broader strategy to enhance user experience on its platform, particularly by emphasizing Reels and personalized recommendations. Recently, Instagram announced that users would soon be able to select topics they want to see more or less of, further personalizing their content. This is not the first instance of Instagram attempting to empower users in shaping their social media experience. In 2022, the platform introduced alternative feeds—Following and Favorites—and in 2023, Threads allowed users to toggle between different feeds, enhancing the personalization aspect. These developments come amidst ongoing discussions in Congress regarding the impact of social media algorithms on young audiences, driving the need for more transparent and user-centric options. In a demonstration, Instagram head Adam Mosseri showcased how users could easily access an interface at the top of their feed to suggest or search for topics of interest, as well as indicate content they wish to minimize. This feature could enable the algorithm to adapt more effectively to users’ evolving preferences. For instance, if a user’s favorite sports team is struggling, they might prefer to see fewer posts related to that team for a while. Conversely, Threads offers a unique experience, characterized by its rapid-fire posts and updates, particularly during news events. Given this immediacy, a straightforward method for users to tag their algorithm preferences could prove beneficial. In the fast-paced environment of text-focused social apps, users are accustomed to interacting with content in real time, making this proposed feature a potentially valuable addition. While Mosseri hinted at significant changes coming to Instagram, including a shift towards more focus on Reels, DMs, and recommendations, further details regarding the public launch of the algorithm configuration feature remain undisclosed.
