Meta’s Threads is enhancing its platform by broadening the range of topics available through the communities feature, as announced on Monday. This move is likely aimed at encouraging users to engage more on Threads instead of turning to alternatives like Reddit and X. Since its launch in October, Threads has introduced over 100 communities, covering interests such as basketball, television, K-pop, and literature. With the recent expansion, the platform now boasts more than 200 communities. New additions include dedicated spaces for specific teams like Lakers Threads, Knicks Threads, and Spurs Threads. In addition to expanding community topics, Threads is also experimenting with flairs for users, similar to functionalities seen on Reddit. This feature allows users to display customizable labels beneath their usernames. For example, NBA fans can indicate their team allegiance within the NBA community, while book enthusiasts can highlight their status as authors. Moreover, Threads is piloting a “Champion” badge aimed at recognizing highly engaged members within communities. These badges will be awarded to a select group of users who are both well-followed and actively involved in discussions. Since its inception, Threads has focused on boosting user engagement and retention through features such as direct messaging, group chats, and temporary posts. The platform has seen significant growth, surpassing 400 million users by August, just two years post-launch, with daily visits exceeding 150 million this fall. In a competitive landscape that includes X and emerging platforms like Bluesky, Threads continues to innovate and attract users.
