Threads, Meta’s rival to X, is officially launching a new feature that allows users to attach text posts of up to 10,000 characters, a significant increase from the prior limit of 500. This update aims to cater to the needs of creators, facilitating the sharing of links to external content such as blogs, podcasts, and newsletters. While X has allowed its paid users to post up to 25,000 characters, Threads is focusing on providing a free option that encourages creators to express themselves more freely. This move comes in response to user behavior indicating a desire for longer content, as many have resorted to sharing screenshots of longer texts instead of utilizing the platform’s previous limitations. For instance, authors might share excerpts from upcoming books to generate interest, while journalists could link to longer features. Meta has observed these trends and designed the new feature to not only enhance user expression but also to foster promotion of creators' work outside of Threads. In this update, users can format their text with various styles, including bold and italics, and even incorporate emojis to enrich their posts. Additionally, the links shared in these attachments will be prominently displayed, contrasting with X's approach to link visibility, which has been criticized for downplaying external content. However, it's important to note that text attachments on Threads will not be indexed by search engines like Google and won't be federated to other platforms, a limitation that Meta is considering addressing in future updates. With this enhancement, Threads is positioning itself as a more flexible platform for creators, providing tools that facilitate engagement and outreach without charging for extended character limits, unlike its competitor.
