Threads finally brings messaging to the web

Threads has officially introduced messaging capabilities on its web platform, allowing users to engage in both one-on-one and group chats from their desktops. This update, announced by the Meta-owned social network on Tuesday, aims to align Threads more closely with competitors such as X and Bluesky. Connor Hayes, the head of Threads at Meta, highlighted that web messaging was the most requested enhancement following the launch of direct messages (DMs) in July 2025. In his announcement on Threads, Hayes noted, 'Our most engaged users are active on the web, spending longer sessions at their desks. A conversation app should be accessible wherever you are, and now it is.' The new web interface features a 'Messages' tab that provides access to the DM inbox, along with a 'Requests' section for incoming message requests. Users can also quickly search their messages and initiate new chats. This launch follows Hayes' earlier hints in April regarding the upcoming web messaging functionality. Since its inception in 2023, Threads has been working diligently to enhance its platform. The company reported a significant increase in user engagement, with weekly message volumes rising by 30% since the beginning of the year, totaling approximately 350 million DMs weekly. In addition to web messaging, Threads has introduced a unique feature called Live Chats, which allows real-time conversations during cultural events. Initially available to the NBA Threads community during the playoffs, Live Chats enable users to exchange messages, photos, videos, links, and emojis. Each chat can accommodate up to 150 active participants, while others can observe and participate in polls in a 'spectator' mode. The rollout of web messaging and Live Chats underlines Threads' commitment to prioritizing conversational interactions, enhancing user engagement beyond simple posts and replies.
