On Tuesday, Instagram's Threads, a contender in the social media landscape against X, unveiled two innovative features aimed at enhancing its integration with the fediverse, the expansive open social web. Threads users can now opt in to view posts from other fediverse participants through a specialized feed. This feature allows users to discover content from various federated platforms like Mastodon, Bookwyrm, and WriteFreely. However, these posts will not be mixed with regular Threads content; instead, users will access them via a dedicated link within the app. Peter Cottle, an engineer at Threads, explained that while users can view prominent posts from the fediverse, they are currently unable to reply directly to these posts. Nonetheless, they can view responses from federated users on their own Threads posts in a separate section of the app. Additionally, Threads now includes a search function for fediverse users, enabling users to find profiles from platforms such as WordPress and Flipboard. This move is part of Threads' strategy to create a more federated experience, connecting users to the broader network of decentralized social media servers. Launched in July 2023, Threads has quickly grown to become the largest application utilizing the ActivityPub protocol, which underpins platforms like Mastodon. While Threads has drawn inspiration from traditional social networks and open-source platforms alike, it is increasingly focused on fostering connections beyond its own user base. Since its initial release, Threads has rolled out features allowing users to share their posts with the fediverse, interact with replies from other platforms, and follow users across various servers. Following its expansion into the European market in June, Meta reported that Threads has engaged with over 75% of all fediverse servers since launching its sharing capabilities a year ago. However, the timeline for complete integration with the fediverse remains uncertain, as does the introduction of account portability, a crucial feature for users seeking more control over their social media presence. This aspect is vital for decentralized applications, empowering users to have greater authority over their information and interactions.
