The demand for automation in manufacturing is surging, particularly as industries grapple with labor shortages. In response, Theker, an ambitious AI robotics startup, is poised to transform the landscape with its innovative approach to robotics. Unlike conventional robots that are limited to specific tasks, Theker's machines are designed to adapt to a variety of functions, addressing the complex needs of modern manufacturing. Co-founder Carla Gómez Cano highlighted the limitations of traditional robots, stating, "If you always have to put the same cookie in the same box, that works perfectly, but most processes aren’t like that." Theker’s robots are engineered for versatility, featuring interchangeable components that allow them to be reconfigured for tasks such as package sorting, clothing packing, and handling various containers in warehouses. Theker has already caught the attention of major players in the retail sector, with Inditex, the parent company of Zara, among its early investors. This backing reflects the startup's aspirations, which extend beyond retail into more demanding industrial environments where the intricacies of manual labor are even greater. Recently, Theker announced that it has raised $85 million in what is being touted as the largest Series A funding round in European robotics history. The investment was spearheaded by the American venture capital firm CRV, with support from a diverse array of investors, including tech giant Samsung and Aglaé Ventures, linked to LVMH chairman Bernard Arnault. Although discussions with Samsung are still ongoing, Gómez Cano expressed enthusiasm over the potential partnership, which could provide Theker with a trifecta of customer, supplier, and investor. The startup's focus is firmly on delivering practical solutions in logistics and operations, bypassing the innovation departments that often slow progress. To showcase its capabilities, Theker has established a showroom in central Barcelona and plans to expand to additional locations across Europe, the United States, and Asia. As demand for its services grows, Theker is also looking to significantly increase its workforce. With 15,000 job applications already received, the company anticipates expanding from a small team to as many as 120 employees by year’s end. Gómez Cano acknowledged the ambitious nature of their growth plans, quipping about their previous fundraising targets. The successful funding round has reinforced Theker’s decision to maintain its headquarters in Barcelona, highlighting the city's emergence as a robotics hub and a vital part of Europe's tech landscape.
