Sam Altman and Jony Ive have a 'lick' test for OpenAI's mysterious AI device, which they expect within the next 2 years

Sam Altman and Jony Ive aim to create an AI device from OpenAI that is so appealing it might make you want to take a bite out of it. In a recent discussion at the Emmerson Collective's DemoDay, they shared insights into the development of this innovative gadget, revealing that previous prototypes did not quite hit the mark. Altman recalled an earlier model that failed to evoke the desired reaction, saying, "I did not have any feeling of, I want to pick up that thing and take a bite out of it." However, he noted that they eventually achieved the right design, thanks to Ive's unique concept for evaluation. "We'll know we have the design right if you want to lick it or take a bite out of it," Altman recounted Ive suggesting. While details about the consumer device remain largely under wraps, the anticipation is building as Ive indicated it will launch in less than two years. In May, OpenAI made headlines by acquiring Ive's AI hardware startup, IO, for approximately $6.5 billion, signaling a deepened collaboration between the two visionaries. They are working together on a range of AI products, with consumer devices being a primary focus. Altman expressed his hopes that when people encounter their device, their reaction will be one of simplicity and utility: "That's it. Like it is so simple, but then it just does so much for you." He praised Ive's meticulous approach to design, which has stripped away unnecessary features, resulting in an elegant yet powerful device. In stark contrast to the overwhelming experience of current technology, Altman described their vision as one that brings joy and tranquility, moving away from the chaos often associated with modern gadgets. He remarked, "I don't think it's making any of our lives peaceful and calm and just letting us focus on other stuff." Ive echoed this sentiment, emphasizing that the best-designed products possess a sense of inevitability, despite the extensive thought and care involved in their development. He expressed a disdain for products that overly showcase their complexity, favoring those that appear almost deceptively simple yet effective.
