RIP social media. What comes next is messy.

Last fall, Petter Törnberg from the University of Amsterdam shared insights into the problematic nature of social media during an in-depth interview. His research highlights the mechanisms that contribute to some of the platform's most concerning aspects, including the rise of partisan echo chambers, the concentration of influence among a select group of elite users, and the amplification of extreme divisive voices. Törnberg expressed skepticism about the future of social media, suggesting that while many strategies have been proposed to address these issues, they are unlikely to lead to significant change. According to Törnberg, the root of the problem lies not in the much-maligned algorithms or non-chronological feeds, but rather in the structural dynamics inherent to social media itself. He argues that we may be trapped in a cycle of toxic feedback loops unless a revolutionary redesign of these platforms is developed to alter these ingrained patterns. Since the interview, Törnberg has continued his research, publishing two new papers and a preprint that delve deeper into the structural differences between social media and the physical world, revealing unexpected consequences. One of his recent studies, released in PLoS ONE, zeroes in on the echo chamber effect. This research utilizes agent-based modeling combined with large language models to create simulated AI personas that mimic online behavior. In this simulation, users were programmed to hold either a particular opinion or its opposite, engaging randomly with selected members of a virtual community. The findings reaffirm Törnberg’s earlier conclusions: echo chambers are an inherent part of social media's architecture, emerging even in the absence of filter bubbles. Törnberg noted, 'One surprising discovery is that echo chambers can form without algorithmic nudges, even in spaces where users prefer diversity. Interestingly, filter bubbles, often blamed for promoting homogeneity, can actually serve as a remedy.'
