A16z partner says software engineers spent decades disrupting industries. Now, they're the 'disrupted.'

For years, software engineers were the driving force of disruption across various industries. However, the landscape is shifting, and now they find themselves on the receiving end of this transformation. Recent advancements in AI, particularly with tools like AI code editors and vibe-coding solutions, are revolutionizing the field of software engineering. Martin Casado, a general partner at Andreessen Horowitz, shared insights on this evolution during an episode of Jack Altman’s podcast, "Uncapped." Casado, who has witnessed the software industry's journey since the 1990s, remarked on how the very disruptors of the past are now experiencing disruption themselves. "We disrupted everything, from back offices to hotels," he noted, emphasizing the monumental changes AI has ushered into the profession. Casado believes that the rise of AI marks a pivotal moment for software engineers. He stated, "This is the first time I would say that we're probably getting legitimately disrupted as a discipline." The impact of AI is already evident, as tools like Cursor, Claude Code, and Replit become commonplace in the workplace, altering how engineers approach their tasks and even their job prospects. With tech giants like Google and Meta acknowledging the increasing role of AI in coding, Casado pointed out that the definition of a software engineer is undergoing a fundamental transformation due to these advancements. Interestingly, he views these changes with optimism: "It's kind of fun to actually be the disrupted for a change," he remarked. Despite the excitement surrounding AI, industry leaders have warned about the potential consequences. Meta's CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, anticipates that AI could soon perform the duties of a midlevel engineer. Thomas Dohmke, the former CEO of GitHub, described coding as a blend of production and creativity, suggesting that as AI takes over production tasks, engineers might have more opportunities to focus on creative aspects of their work. OpenAI's president, Greg Brockman, echoed this sentiment, asserting that the role of software engineers may shift towards quality control. However, while many are enthusiastic about the potential of AI, Casado cautioned against overestimating its current capabilities. A recent study indicated that AI tools could hinder productivity among experienced developers, as those using generative AI took longer to complete tasks compared to their peers. Casado concluded with a reminder of the importance of distinguishing between the allure of AI and its practical utility. "These things are absolutely magic, but I think it makes it very hard to think clearly about the actual utility," he explained, highlighting the ongoing conversation about the evolving landscape of software engineering.
