Gemini vs ChatGPT: Who creates better 90’s retro-style “Nano Banana” portraits?

A new internet phenomenon is capturing attention as users transform personal images into nostalgic 90's-style portraits, featuring distinct aesthetic lighting and mood. Google’s Gemini has emerged as a frontrunner in this trend, demonstrating remarkable precision in generating these retro images. Our experiments involved multiple prompts, leading us to compile a guide aimed at mastering these vintage aesthetics. In a head-to-head comparison, we tested both Gemini and ChatGPT to determine which AI could better recreate these iconic portraits. Using identical prompts, we generated images of two characters—a male and a female—and were struck by the notable differences in the results. Gemini produced beautifully crafted retro portraits that resonated with the true essence of the 90's vibe, while ChatGPT altered the characters' facial features significantly. Processing times also varied dramatically between the two platforms. ChatGPT required approximately 5 to 7 minutes to generate its images, whereas Gemini accomplished the task in under 30 seconds. However, ChatGPT excelled in creating immersive backgrounds and lighting, closely aligning with the prompts provided. Gemini's capabilities extend beyond just generating high-resolution images; it can create visuals inspired by various art styles, cinematic effects, and even 3D figures. It can emulate specific eras, such as the noir of the 1940s or the Polaroid feel of the 1970s, and produce textures that enhance the final output. Notably, users can download or share the final images directly. Moreover, Gemini is adept at crafting detailed, creative prompts that can instruct itself or any image AI on what to generate. It can articulate scene descriptions, moods, and styles with great detail. In contrast, while ChatGPT can produce basic visualizations through text, it does not have the ability to generate high-resolution images directly, functioning instead as a creative guide for other AIs. Essentially, Gemini acts as the artist, bringing the crafted vision to life, while ChatGPT serves as the director, shaping the concepts and instructions. It's important to note that both images used in this comparison were generated via AI technology. This exploration highlights the unique strengths and weaknesses of each platform in the evolving landscape of AI-generated art.
