VCs are still hiring MBAs, but firms are starting to need other experience more

The pathway from MBA programs to venture capital careers remains significant, but recent trends suggest that this route may be less stable than it once was. According to insights from PitchBook and recent academic studies, notable changes are afoot. In 2024, Harvard successfully placed 50 graduates from its 1,004 MBA cohort into venture capital positions, with these individuals earning a median starting salary of $177,500. Meanwhile, Stanford, with a smaller class size, saw about 30 of its MBA graduates enter the VC field. Currently, over 10,000 alumni from prestigious institutions like Harvard, Stanford, and Wharton occupy senior roles within U.S. venture capital firms. Despite these figures, the influence of the MBA on the venture capital landscape appears to be waning. Research conducted by Stanford professor Ilya Strebulaev indicates a decline in the percentage of mid-career venture capitalists with MBAs—from 44% in the early 2000s to just 32% today. This shift is largely attributed to the evolving nature of venture capital, which is now embracing sectors such as artificial intelligence and hardware. In these areas, firms are prioritizing technical expertise over traditional business education, leading to a growing focus on talent from innovative companies like OpenAI and SpaceX. As executive recruiter Will Champagne highlights, the current demand for MBA graduates in venture capital is diminishing. Yet, this sentiment has not fully reached students; Stanford’s venture capital club remains robust, with around 600 members drawn from the approximately 850 MBA students enrolled at the institution. The financial commitment for an MBA from a top program is significant, often exceeding $200,000, raising questions about the return on investment for future students navigating this shifting job market.
