Naval Ravikant, co-founder and chairman of AngelList, has delivered a stark warning to investors still focused on pure software companies: it's time to reconsider. In a recent episode of his podcast, Ravikant stated, "Pure software is rapidly becoming uninvestable." He believes that if your primary advantage lies solely in creating unique software, you may be in trouble. Ravikant points to a dual threat in the market. With the rise of AI coding tools, anyone with a clear vision can now develop a functional application in a matter of hours. Moreover, these AI agents are advancing quickly, suggesting that within a year, they could produce robust, scalable code rather than just basic prototypes. "The genie is out of the bottle," he emphasized, advising venture investors to pivot their focus towards hardware, network effects, and AI models. He identifies a pivotal moment in this transition: late 2025, when Anthropic's Claude Opus 4.5 launched, showcasing an AI agent capable of complete app development. Ravikant likened it to having a junior programmer who is fast, nearly free, and eager to assist. In a particularly bold statement, Ravikant has suggested that this evolution could threaten Apple's iPhone dominance. He referenced a tweet from March 23, where he claimed, "AI coding agents can now deliver one-shot, custom apps straight to your phone. It's the beginning of the end for the iPhone's dominance." This assertion stems from his creation of a personal app store—a web interface on his iPhone that allows AI agents to generate customized applications tailored for his device. Ravikant illustrated this concept with an example: if he wants an app to track his workouts, he can provide detailed instructions and receive a fully functional application without going through the traditional App Store approval process. He stated, "I put a lot of it in one prompt and immediately got a working app delivered to my personal app store." While Apple currently prevents sideloading on iPhones outside the EU, Ravikant's perspective suggests that the once-tight grip of App Store distribution is loosening as personalized software creation becomes more prevalent. On a personal note, Ravikant shared his experience of "vibe coding," spending hours nightly issuing natural-language commands to AI agents that then write, debug, and deploy complete applications. He finds this process more engaging than video games, as it aligns with genuine creative ambitions and offers real-world applications. "The objective is created by you and can keep expanding. And it has real-world relevance," he remarked, highlighting the unbounded potential of this new coding paradigm.
