AI boom sparks rush for engineers who can speak both code and business

Over the past year and a half, the need for forward deployed engineers (FDEs) has surged dramatically, with some estimates indicating an 800% year-on-year growth in India, albeit starting from a small base. These engineers, also referred to as AI solutions engineers or applied AI engineers, are not just tasked with building AI models; they must also engage effectively with clients and understand their operational processes. According to Maya Nair, Executive Director at Grafton Recruitment, India, the shift in demand reflects a broader evolution within the AI sector. Companies are increasingly requiring professionals who can translate technical capabilities into tangible business outcomes. Rajesh Sinha, Founder and Chairman of Fulcrum Digital, emphasizes that clients today seek not only AI proficiency but also the ability to seamlessly incorporate AI into their existing business frameworks to generate measurable results. While companies continue to hire data scientists and machine learning engineers, there is a growing need for engineers who can work directly with clients to implement and optimize AI solutions in real-world scenarios. Fulcrum is witnessing demand across various sectors, including enterprise AI transformation, customer service automation, and specific applications in banking and healthcare. Similarly, Coforge is adapting its talent mix; CEO Sudhir Singh reported a decrease in traditional tech roles and a rising demand for FDEs and AI engineers. With plans to expand their team of FDEs significantly, Coforge is embedding these specialists within client organizations to facilitate AI deployments and identify future opportunities. The concept of merging technical and business skills in engineering roles is not novel, but its significance has grown as firms strive to integrate AI into their core operations. Neelabh Shukla, Chief Business Officer at Careernet Group, notes that while customer-facing engineering roles have existed for years, the FDE role has emerged distinctly to focus on aligning product engineering with customer needs. The demand for such professionals is not limited to IT services; cloud providers, AI-native startups, and software-as-a-service firms are also seeking FDEs. As technology companies increasingly require individuals who can function at the intersection of engineering and business strategy, hiring is expected to rise as more AI initiatives move into production. Sinha believes that as AI becomes integral to business operations, companies will prioritize professionals who excel in technical depth, problem-solving, communication, and domain knowledge. However, finding individuals with this comprehensive skill set remains a challenge. Organizations are responding by investing in upskilling programs for promising employees and offering broader exposure to technical teams. For instance, LTM, a technology firm under Larsen & Toubro Group, has announced plans to develop over 1,000 engineers with AI skills, including FDEs, through its new Centre of Excellence. CEO Venu Lambu highlighted that the initiative aims to enhance productivity and create meaningful business outcomes. Despite these efforts, the industry faces a talent shortage. According to Shukla, the specific requirements for FDE roles mean that they cannot be filled by traditional software engineers or domain experts alone, as a high level of competence in both areas is necessary. The education system has yet to produce a systematic pipeline of such talent. Recruiters are also looking to adjacent talent pools, such as solution architects and product managers, who can be trained in AI technologies. Some organizations are forming specialized teams to combine the necessary skills, but experts warn that this could dilute the unique capabilities of an FDE, which ideally should be a highly skilled individual proficient across technology, customer engagement, and business domains.
