Beware coworkers who produce AI-generated ‘workslop’

A new term has emerged in the realm of artificial intelligence, as researchers from BetterUp Labs, in partnership with the Stanford Social Media Lab, introduce the concept of 'workslop.' This term refers to subpar AI-generated content that pretends to be high-quality work but ultimately fails to contribute meaningfully to tasks. In a recent article featured in the Harvard Business Review, the researchers highlight that workslop may be a significant factor behind the 95% of organizations that have implemented AI technologies yet report no tangible benefits from these investments. According to the findings, workslop can often be ineffective, incomplete, or devoid of essential context, leading to additional complications for teams who must sift through and correct the output. The researchers emphasize the detrimental nature of workslop, noting that it shifts the workload onto others who are left to interpret or redo the inadequate submissions. An ongoing survey conducted among 1,150 full-time employees in the U.S. revealed that nearly 40% had encountered workslop within the past month. To combat this growing issue, the study advocates for workplace leaders to cultivate a culture of responsible AI usage. This includes demonstrating intentional and purposeful use of AI technologies and establishing clear guidelines for their teams regarding acceptable practices and norms.
