The surge in artificial intelligence is transforming the landscape of memory chips, which have traditionally been viewed as a cyclical aspect of the semiconductor industry. This shift has propelled companies like South Korea's Samsung Electronics into the spotlight, as their market value recently reached the impressive milestone of $1 trillion. The company's stock has soared over 140% this year alone. Meanwhile, another South Korean titan, SK Hynix, is also making waves in the market. The company has experienced an astonishing stock increase of more than 200% this year, driven by the skyrocketing demand for high-bandwidth memory essential for AI systems. With its market capitalization now hovering around 1,395.5 trillion South Korean won, or approximately $935 billion, SK Hynix stands as a leading memory chip supplier for Nvidia, whose AI accelerators are pivotal in the ongoing AI revolution. As corporations rapidly invest in AI data centers, the focus is shifting from just the companies that create AI models to the essential hardware that supports them. Charu Chanana, the chief investment strategist at Saxo, noted that "Memory is becoming one of the clearest beneficiaries of AI hardware demand." This surge in demand is largely attributed to the increasing complexity of AI applications that require enhanced computing power and memory capabilities. The impact of this trend extends beyond just individual companies. The recently launched Roundhill Memory ETF, trading under the ticker DRAM, has quickly gained traction on Wall Street, nearly doubling in value since its inception on April 2. This fund includes major players like Micron, Samsung Electronics, Sandisk, and SK Hynix, representing the growing interest in memory chip investments. Additionally, the rise in memory chip stocks has contributed to a broader market rally in South Korea, with the Kospi index reaching record highs this month, marking an over 80% increase this year. The market's robust performance has led Goldman Sachs to label South Korea as its "highest conviction view" in Asia, highlighting the nation's stronghold in memory chips and its exposure to the surging demand for AI infrastructure.
