Lightspeed Ventures partner says Sora will make social media creators 'far, far, far less valuable'

The introduction of AI-generated video has sent ripples through the social media landscape, raising critical questions about the future of content creation. OpenAI's recent launch of Sora 2 has introduced a new level of sophistication in AI video production, making it more realistic and finely tailored to individual viewers. Michael Mignano, a partner at Lightspeed Ventures, believes this shift could signify the decline of the traditional creator. During an appearance on the podcast 'Sourcery,' he argued that a future dominated by instant and artificial content could render human creators significantly less valuable. Mignano emphasized the importance of user engagement, pointing out that the effectiveness of platforms like TikTok hinges on their algorithms that capture and retain viewer attention. He noted, however, that while AI can reduce costs associated with content creation, it poses a direct threat to influencers who currently rely on their unique perspectives and styles. "The individual creator becomes far, far, far less valuable in that dynamic," Mignano stated, highlighting a profound transformation in how content is valued. Mignano’s expertise in the digital media realm is notable. He co-founded Aviary, a photo editing tool acquired by Adobe, and was instrumental in the development of the podcasting platform Anchor, later bought by Spotify. His recent investments include backing Elon Musk's xAI, made before the acquisition of X, formerly known as Twitter. He characterized the potential 'death of the creator' as devastating, yet he views it as a pivotal moment for the internet. Although AI-generated video is not yet fully capable of producing on-demand, perfectly tailored content, some users are already uneasy about its implications. TikTok, for instance, allows users to filter out AI-generated videos from their feeds, indicating a pushback against this new trend. The emergence of AI influencers on platforms like Instagram and the proliferation of AI-generated scams on TikTok Shop illustrate the changing dynamics of content creation. Mignano pointed out that while AI may not achieve perfect customization, the current trajectory suggests a move towards a more artificial internet, where bots may outnumber human interactions. Industry figures like Alexis Ohanian and Sam Altman have raised concerns about what they call the 'dead internet theory,' suggesting that bot activity is eclipsing human engagement online. In this evolving landscape, the era of the social media megastar may be waning, as Reed Duchscher, former manager of MrBeast, noted that building niche internet businesses is becoming increasingly feasible. So, how can creators navigate this shifting environment? Mignano shared his insights in a statement, asserting that quality will ultimately prevail. "Platforms will no longer reward humans posting the same old, tried and true formats and memes," he indicated. "Instead, true uniqueness of image, likeness, and creativity will be the only viable path for human-created content."
