In recent years, corporate leaders have increasingly advocated for a 'Great Flattening' within their organizations. This push is driven by concerns that excessive management layers, redundant roles, and bureaucratic processes have stifled efficiency. In 2023, Meta's CEO Mark Zuckerberg highlighted this issue during a company Q&A, expressing his desire to avoid a management structure filled with layers of 'managers managing managers.' This sentiment was echoed in the corporate world as companies like Citi and UPS took steps to reduce their management tiers dramatically, with Citi cutting from 13 to 8 layers and UPS removing 12,000 managers from its workforce of 85,000. As artificial intelligence continues to integrate into the workplace, experts foresee a new wave of organizational restructuring. Eno Reyes, co-founder and CTO of Factory, an AI-focused software development platform, predicts that organizational charts will increasingly flatten as AI technologies enable individuals to oversee larger teams. By automating routine tasks such as reporting and data analysis, AI empowers fewer managers to effectively manage more personnel. Reyes noted that AI-centric teams within organizations are already exhibiting a more streamlined structure compared to traditional setups. IBM Consulting is also adapting; they anticipate new management frameworks as they incorporate 'digital workers' into their workforce of 150,000 human consultants. Senior vice president Mohamad Ali shared that IBM has developed thousands of AI agents now operational across nearly 300 client projects, suggesting that human managers will need to adjust their approach to oversight. While immediate changes to management hierarchies may not be evident, the expectation that these structures will remain static is diminishing. Former McKinsey manager Arvind Vasudevan pointed out that traditional models, which rely on a hierarchy of an engagement manager and several analysts, may soon be obsolete. Instead, he foresees more nimble consulting teams led by versatile generalists, supported by technical specialists who develop AI tools for diverse projects. McKinsey is actively seeking out '5Xers,' individuals with deep expertise in one area who can also manage multiple aspects of projects. Vasudevan, now co-founder of the startup Plaido, envisions a future filled with 'megamanagers'—those who will oversee larger teams and a broader range of responsibilities than ever before. This evolving landscape of work, where every team member may take on managerial roles over both human staff and digital agents, signifies a dramatic shift in how organizations will operate moving forward.
