BT BIG STORY: Your next colleague could be an AI agent. What does that mean for Indian IT, and for your job?

A new wave of automation is sweeping through the Indian IT sector, as advanced AI agents take on roles that were once the domain of human programmers. These innovative tools, like Claude Code from e AI and Cognition Labs' Devin, are now capable of managing complex programming tasks independently, from fixing bugs to updating legacy code. Tech Mahindra is at the forefront of deploying these AI agents within their IT operations, utilizing them to handle incidents and streamline the software development lifecycle. These agents are also making significant strides in customer service, capable of processing and acting on spoken or transcribed conversations. The evolution of AI in the workplace is not just about enhancing efficiency; it signifies a fundamental shift in the workforce dynamics. Nikhil Malhotra, Chief AI and Innovation Officer at Tech Mahindra, emphasizes that these AI agents are now tackling a variety of tasks, including troubleshooting, software testing, and financial reconciliations. The implications of this shift are profound, as many experts predict a contraction in profit margins for IT service companies. According to Bengaluru-based consultancy UnearthInsight, leading firms in the sector could see a 2-3% drop in margins as they integrate AI technologies into their operations. This trend is particularly pronounced among mid-tier companies, which may experience a decrease in margins from 16-18% to 14-16%. Clients are increasingly demanding that productivity gains be reflected in their contracts, further squeezing margins. As the role of AI agents continues to expand, perceptions are shifting. Some industry leaders now refer to these agents as digital teammates, enhancing productivity and accelerating project timelines. Mphasis's CEO, Nitin Rakesh, notes that AI agents are transitioning from basic assistants to integral components of the team that support decision-making processes. Organizations are already leveraging multiple AI-agent applications across various functions, with many reporting an average of five distinct use cases simultaneously. These include coding, IT support, and operational tasks, indicating a trend towards widespread adoption across departments. AI agents are not only enhancing productivity but also revolutionizing how tasks are performed. For instance, in healthcare, AI is being utilized to consolidate clinical, claims, and patient data, improving care management and reducing hospital readmissions. Similarly, in customer service, AI is streamlining operations by managing routine inquiries and improving quality control. However, the rise of AI agents also raises concerns about job displacement. Companies like Coforge have downsized their organizational structures significantly, while major tech firms are making substantial layoffs, citing AI implementation as a key factor. The ongoing evolution of AI in the workplace suggests a shift from traditional job roles to new functions that emphasize human oversight and creativity. As AI continues to evolve, the challenge for companies will be to differentiate themselves in a landscape where AI capabilities are widely accessible. Success will hinge on leveraging unique data insights, ensuring reliability, and knowing when to engage human judgment. The future workplace may see fewer individuals performing routine tasks, replaced by AI agents, while humans focus on higher-level decision-making and creative problem-solving.
