Sora thrilled me when it was first released. Now, I'm bored with it.

When Sora 2 was launched, it captured the attention of many, and few were as enthusiastic as I was. In the initial days, I found myself completely immersed, draining my phone's battery by early evening while creating amusing videos featuring myself and friends. However, six weeks later, my fascination has faded, and the app has rarely crossed my mind. What initially drew me to Sora was its ability to craft lifelike videos of friends, provided they consented to have their likeness used—referred to as 'cameos' within the app. I delighted in producing comedic clips of my friends in absurd scenarios, from singing in a ska band to stumbling on roller skates. These personal touches made the experience enjoyable and relatable. While many users took to creating videos of celebrities in unrealistic situations—like Stephen Hawking on a skateboard or Martin Luther King Jr. delivering memes instead of his iconic speech—I found these far less engaging than my friends' antics. There’s a vast array of hilarious depictions of historical figures, but nothing beats the unique humor of my buddy Matt in a rodeo mishap. The key to my enjoyment lay in the connections with friends. The videos featuring them were genuinely funny, while the rest felt less meaningful. For ambient AI videos that merely looked cool, I could easily turn to Meta's Vibes, which lacks the personal touch that Sora offered. Unfortunately, my social circle didn’t expand on the platform; most of my friends who aren’t in tech were horrified by the idea of strangers using their faces. Moreover, Sora has faced criticism for the type of content generated on its platform. There have been instances of fetish-related videos that many find unsettling, further complicating the app's image. Recently, OpenAI lifted the invite code requirement, allowing more people in the U.S., Canada, Japan, and Korea to join Sora. Yet, despite this accessibility, I haven’t seen a surge of interest among my friends. Most have also drifted away from the app, which raises questions about its longevity and user engagement. While my own excitement has waned, it doesn’t mean that the app is a failure. Many users are likely leveraging it for various creative purposes beyond just sharing jokes with friends. However, the substantial operational costs associated with running such a platform are concerning, with estimates suggesting OpenAI could be spending up to $15 million daily to maintain Sora. Looking ahead, the future of Sora remains uncertain. Ironically, it succeeded in delivering a social experience that Meta's Vibes failed to achieve. Perhaps there is still potential for an engaging social app that fosters connections among friends. Alternatively, Sora may evolve into a professional tool with a paid model. For now, I find myself reverting to more conventional smartphone distractions.
