Byju's, once celebrated as India's leading ed-tech success story, now finds itself entangled in a web of legal battles and staggering debt. The company's founder, Byju Raveendran, has recently received a six-month prison sentence from a Singapore court for failing to comply with court orders regarding his assets. From its peak valuation of $22 billion, Byju's has faced a dramatic downturn marked by operational and financial turmoil. This decline can be traced back to a series of significant challenges including delays in audits, mounting liabilities, and growing investor unease, culminating in insolvency proceedings and international legal disputes. Initially, in 2022, Byju's soared to new heights, even securing football legend Lionel Messi as its global brand ambassador and featuring on the Indian cricket team's jersey. Founded in 2011 as Think & Learn Pvt Ltd, Byju's gained rapid popularity in India, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic when digital education became essential. The company made headlines with its acquisition of Aakash Educational Services for nearly $3 billion, further solidifying its market position. However, a turning point came in November 2021 when Byju's took out a $1.2 billion term loan from international lenders, marking a significant moment for Indian startups on the global stage. Unfortunately, this loan became a catalyst for its subsequent decline. The company faced scrutiny after delays in submitting its audited financial statements raised serious questions about its transparency and governance. The FY21 financial report revealed a shocking loss of over ₹4,588 crore, causing alarm among investors and lenders alike. Following these revelations, Deloitte resigned as the auditor due to communication issues and delays, a move later mirrored by BDO Global’s India affiliate. As 2022 progressed into 2023, tensions escalated into global legal conflicts. Lenders accused Byju's of breaching loan agreements, alleging that more than $500 million linked to the term loan was transferred without proper disclosure. Lawsuits emerged in Delaware, New York, and Singapore, challenging the company's financial practices and governance standards. By July 2024, insolvency proceedings commenced over unpaid debts to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), while the company continued to grapple with larger legal and financial complications. Amid these struggles, reports of delayed employee salaries and layoffs surfaced, intensifying frustrations within the workforce. Investors and lenders have criticized Byju's for its inadequate management and governance, leading to a staggering drop in valuation from $22 billion to approximately $1 billion, with Forbes estimating Raveendran's net worth at zero. Byju's story serves as a stark reminder for startups and businesses alike: rapid expansion fueled by borrowed funds without robust management practices can lead to catastrophic outcomes.
