Fickle business strategy has turned my new favorite earbuds into e-waste

This morning, I set out for a run, my iPhone in hand, tethered to a set of wired earbuds. For years, this was my routine, but today the constant tug of the cord was particularly annoying. Just months ago, I had been enjoying the freedom of Bluetooth earbuds, specifically EPOS’s GTW 270, which I received as a gift. Released in 2021 for $200, these earbuds had mostly remained in a drawer until I returned to outdoor running after a long hiatus. Without a convenient place to stash my phone while exercising, those tangled wires felt cumbersome. Although I had initially dismissed the GTW 270 due to its lack of comfort compared to my wired options and occasional connection drops—especially with my PC—using them with my phone was a different experience. I quickly grew fond of this gadget that had once been forgotten. However, my joy was short-lived. In a twist of fate, I lost the charging case, essential for both charging the earbuds and facilitating their connection. As I began to search for a replacement, I discovered the unfortunate reality: EPOS no longer sells standalone charging cases. They had previously offered them but ceased production after exiting the consumer tech market just three years post-launch. The EPOS brand emerged in 2020 from a terminated joint venture between the Danish audio tech company Demant and German audio giant Sennheiser, which had been known as Sennheiser Communications. This turn of events left me not just without my earbuds but also pondering the fickle nature of consumer electronics and brand commitments.
