AI pendants back in vogue at tech show after early setback

At the recent Consumer Electronics Show, AI-enhanced pendants and brooches made a striking comeback, showcasing their capabilities as personal assistants equipped with cameras and microphones. This revival comes on the heels of the Humane AI Pin's disappointing launch last year, which fell short of high expectations. The renewed interest in wearables is further fueled by a collaboration between OpenAI's Sam Altman and renowned designer Jony Ive, who are working on a new AI interaction device expected to debut next year. However, not everyone is embracing this trend. Criticism emerged last year in New York City, where graffiti on subway ads for the Friend brand AI pendants encouraged people to 'go make some real friends,' highlighting concerns about the impact of surveillance capitalism. Despite this backlash, at CES in Las Vegas, manufacturers are pitching AI pendants as innovative tools for capturing memories and enhancing daily productivity. Advancements in technology, particularly in chip design, have addressed previous issues such as poor battery life and software glitches that plagued earlier models. Lenovo, a leading player in the tech industry, introduced a prototype pendant via its Motorola brand that allows users to control its AI assistant, Qira, through voice commands. This hands-free device aims to capture audio and visuals seamlessly. In a strategic move, Amazon acquired Bee, a startup specializing in wearable AI, while Meta has expanded its AI device portfolio with the purchase of Limitless. Bee's devices, which can be worn on the wrist, belt, or lapel, function primarily as personal assistants for note-taking and reminders. At the same time, Meta is focusing on integrating AI into its Ray-Ban sunglasses, pushing the boundaries of wearable tech. Various companies are exploring different designs for wearable AI. For instance, Vocci has developed a ring dedicated to AI-assisted note-taking, while Plaud offers a pin and a slim rectangular device for capturing conversations. Chinese startup iBuddi presented a prototype aimed at combating screen fatigue, emphasizing its goal to replace phone interactions without adding another screen. According to iBuddi's founder, Yin Haitian, the device is designed to respond to significant moments rather than engage in constant surveillance. Another offering, the Looki L1 AI wearable, continuously records the user's perspective, providing insights on everyday choices and summarizing experiences. Tech analyst Avi Greengart noted a shift in consumer privacy expectations, as society becomes accustomed to surveillance through smartphones and smart devices. While wearable AI is unlikely to replace smartphones in the near future, it is expected to become a familiar component of personal technology alongside smartwatches and glasses. For those wary of the implications of constant monitoring, a startup introduced 'Wearphone,' an innovative mask equipped with earbuds and microphones designed to safeguard private conversations, marking a unique entry in the wearable tech space.
