The skeptic’s guide to humanoid robots going viral on the Internet

Humanoid robots are often portrayed as the future of technology, showcasing their skills in viral videos that capture the public's imagination. However, there's a notable disparity between these eye-catching demonstrations and the robots' actual abilities to perform consistently in everyday settings. Experts like Jonathan Hurst, cofounder of Agility Robotics and a researcher at Oregon State University, highlight the human inclination to assign human-like qualities to these machines. For instance, while a robotic arm executing a dance move may seem impressive, a humanoid robot doing the same can lead to overestimations of its capabilities. Hurst points out, "People automatically extrapolate and assume that the robot that looks like a person can do all the things that a person who can dance could do—which is not true." Moreover, the challenge of creating robots that can adapt their skills to various conditions akin to human flexibility remains significant. Sergey Levine, a computer scientist from the University of California, Berkeley, and cofounder of Physical Intelligence, notes that the complexity of real-world tasks is often underestimated. He emphasizes that while a robot might successfully pour a glass of wine in a controlled setting, the true test lies in its ability to do so with different bottles and glasses in diverse environments. Levine underscores the importance of rigorous evaluations in real-world scenarios, stating, "There’s always a gap between the kind of things that somebody can show in a demo and what the real capability of the robot is." As interest in humanoid robotics grows, it's crucial for both developers and the public to maintain realistic expectations about what these machines can truly achieve.
