Believing misinformation is a “win” for some people, even when proven false

Why do individuals cling to easily debunked claims? Research from social psychologists sheds light on this intriguing phenomenon. Published in the Journal of Social Psychology, the study reveals that for some, endorsing known falsehoods is perceived as a 'victory'. In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, researchers conducted a survey involving 5,535 participants from eight different countries. They aimed to understand the reasons behind the belief in misinformation related to COVID-19, such as the unfounded assertion that 5G technology causes the virus. The study found that the most significant factor influencing belief in such misinformation was the perception of COVID-19 prevention measures as symbolic acts of strength or weakness. The results indicated that individuals who viewed these measures as ways to either resist or yield to external pressures were more likely to subscribe to false narratives. This perspective overshadowed other factors like general feelings about COVID-19, individual thinking styles, and political affiliations. Participants responded to statements that suggested following health guidelines equated to capitulation, revealing a mindset where rejecting factual information is seen as a demonstration of independence. The researchers interpret this behavior as a strategic move; for those who agree with such statements, endorsing misinformation becomes a way to assert control and defy perceived external influences. Rather than engaging with factual information, these individuals prioritize the image of resilience against what they see as the 'enemy' of misinformation, illustrating how deeply personal biases can shape one's acceptance of reality.
