TechCrunch Mobility: The two robotaxi battlegrounds that matter

Welcome to the latest updates in the realm of transportation technology, where robotaxis are emerging as a significant focus. The journey towards fully autonomous vehicles isn't just a race; rather, it resembles a complex and fragmented path, reminiscent of an alluvial plain rather than a straightforward racetrack. This evolution is marked not by competition against each other, but rather by an internal struggle with high stakes. Two major battlegrounds have emerged for the advancement of robotaxis: airports and public transit systems. Airports have historically been pivotal for ride-hailing services, and the same holds true for robotaxis. Waymo, a leading player in this field, is currently providing rides at Phoenix's Sky Harbor Airport and has recently received approval to begin testing its autonomous vehicles at San Francisco International Airport. This comes on the heels of a similar permit granted for San Jose Mineta International Airport, even as Tesla seeks to enter the airport ride service market. In a notable partnership, Waymo has teamed up with transit software firm Via, aiming to integrate its robotaxi services into existing public transit networks. This collaboration will first roll out in Chandler, Arizona, where residents can book rides with Waymo when traditional Chandler Flex vehicles are unavailable. Although this initiative may not yield immediate profits for Waymo, it holds potential for significant outreach. Meanwhile, U.K. startup Wayve has been making headlines for its ambitious approach to automated driving and has secured substantial investments, including a recent $1.05 billion funding round. Now, Wayve is gearing up for a Series D round, with Nvidia expressing interest in potentially investing $500 million. In the broader automotive landscape, Divergent Technologies has shifted its focus from automotive manufacturing to defense, securing $290 million for production related to military contracts. Other noteworthy funding rounds include EV Realty, which aims to enhance charging infrastructure for semitrucks with a new $75 million investment. Hyundai Motor Group is intensifying its focus on North America, aiming to increase annual sales significantly by 2030, alongside a major investment plan to expand production capacity. Rivian has commenced construction on its factory in Atlanta, while Stellantis has decided to halt the production of its all-electric Ram 1500 REV pickup truck due to low demand. Tesla is making changes to its vehicle design to enhance safety, following an investigation into its door handles. Additionally, the company has issued a recall for Powerwall 2 batteries in Australia due to reports of fires. On the delivery front, Uber is exploring drone technology to enhance its Eats service. Looking ahead, Waymo is set to launch its commercial robotaxi service in Nashville by 2026, partnering with Lyft to broaden its reach. Stay tuned for more updates as we continue to monitor these dynamic developments in transportation technology.
