From satellites to space data centers: Why low earth orbit is attracting billions in investment

A transformative wave of investment is sweeping through Low Earth Orbit (LEO), a crucial segment of space defined by altitudes of 2,000 kilometers or less. Once a niche area, LEO is rapidly becoming a pivotal environment for global navigation, telecommunications, and defense, driving a surge in funding and interest. LEO satellites, due to their proximity to Earth, provide faster communication, reduced launch costs, and more efficient responses. Unlike their higher-orbit counterparts, which are tethered to fixed points in space, LEO satellites operate in dynamic constellations that maximize coverage across the globe. According to Space IQ, over $45 billion was invested in LEO infrastructure in 2025, a significant rise from just under $25 billion the previous year. Carlos Moreira, CEO of Wisekey, a Swiss cybersecurity firm, emphasized the strategic importance of orbital access, likening it to traditional assets such as ports and energy grids. A prime example of this evolution is Elon Musk's Starlink network, which already boasts over 9,500 satellites, with plans to expand significantly. SpaceX has also proposed a revolutionary solar-powered orbital data-center system that could potentially involve up to one million satellites. Nvidia has also entered the fray, recently launching a new platform designed to integrate AI computing in orbit. This initiative aims to enhance orbital data centers and enable autonomous operations in space. Jensen Huang, CEO of Nvidia, remarked at the GTC conference 2026 that this approach could redefine both data centers in orbit and the capabilities of spacecraft. Amazon's LEO project, previously known as Project Kuiper, aims to deploy over 3,000 satellites, while the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has approved an additional 4,500. Blue Origin, founded by Jeff Bezos, is expected to introduce more than 5,000 satellites by 2027. Meanwhile, Eutelsat's OneWeb network, currently with over 600 satellites, is backed by significant investments from France, aiming to compete with Starlink. In a global landscape, China has ambitious plans for more than 200,000 satellites across 14 constellations, highlighting a fundamental shift in how space will be utilized and managed. Since 2009, over $400 billion has been funneled into the space economy, with the U.S. contributing more than half, according to Space Capital. Despite the momentum, industry leaders like Moreira caution that the burgeoning sector must be approached with a sense of responsibility, emphasizing the need for space to remain a realm that fosters connectivity and scientific advancement rather than descending into chaotic competition. The challenge of governance in LEO is complex, as existing international frameworks may not be adequate for the fast-paced developments in this domain. Current regulations, often designed for the more predictable geostationary satellites, need to adapt to the unique challenges posed by LEO operations. Industry experts agree that as commercial entities take the lead, a new regulatory perspective is essential to ensure sustainable growth and safety in this burgeoning frontier. As we stand at the cusp of this new era, leaders like Martijn Rogier van Delden from Amazon LEO envision LEO satellites as a transformative solution to connect billions, potentially bridging the digital divide and changing the landscape of global connectivity.
