For nearly twenty years, Amazon Web Services (AWS) has been the backbone of the internet's initial growth phase, enabling startups to bypass the need for physical servers and data center management. However, the emergence of generative AI has sparked a transformation into what is being termed Cloud 2.0, leading to rapid changes in the cloud landscape. Recent revelations from internal Amazon documents indicate that AI startups are hesitating to adopt AWS, choosing instead to allocate their initial budgets toward AI models, inference platforms, and emerging 'neoclouds' that offer GPU access. According to an exclusive report from Business Insider's Eugene Kim, these founders are increasingly turning to alternatives like OpenAI, Anthropic, and specialized GPU providers such as CoreWeave, rather than relying on the traditional cloud services offered by AWS. This shift represents a significant challenge for AWS, as the startup ecosystem that once supported its supremacy is now venturing into different territories. In my previous analysis from 2023, I highlighted how the Cloud 2.0 era is characterized by a shift towards specialized hardware, advanced models, and developer tools that often fall outside the control of established cloud giants. These new offerings are proving to be less 'sticky' than conventional services like compute, storage, and databases. This evolving landscape may help explain why AWS's growth has lagged behind other cloud providers, particularly those that have integrated more attractive AI features for startups. For instance, in the second quarter of this year, Microsoft and Google reported cloud revenue growth exceeding 30%, while AWS's growth remained below 20%. Emerging AI-focused cloud providers are experiencing even more dramatic growth rates, sometimes exceeding 200%, albeit from a smaller initial base. Despite these challenges, it's important to note that AWS continues to hold the title of cloud leader with the largest market share. The company is also forging promising AI partnerships, especially with firms like Anthropic. Yet, as the priorities of startups evolve in response to advancements in AI, the critical question remains: will AWS retain its position at the forefront of the cloud industry in the next five to ten years? Business Insider reached out to Amazon for comments, and the company provided a detailed response, which is available in the main article.
