Weird chemical used in plastics has erupted as latest fentanyl adulterant

In a surprising turn of events, a chemical typically found in plastics has emerged as a new adulterant in illicit drugs across the United States. This unusual substance, known as bis(2,2,6,6-tetramethyl-4-piperidyl) sebacate, or BTMPS, has gained notoriety for its rapid infiltration into the drug market, unlike previous adulterants that took time to establish a presence. BTMPS, which belongs to a class of chemicals known as hindered amine light stabilizers, is primarily used in the production of plastics, coatings, and adhesives to enhance their resistance to weathering and ultraviolet radiation. Surprisingly, it possesses no psychoactive effects, raising questions about its purpose in the drug supply. Researchers are baffled by the sudden appearance of BTMPS in illegal substances and the implications of its use. This chemical has not been tested on humans, as it was never intended for such applications. A recent review published in JAMA Internal Medicine highlights the alarming trajectory of BTMPS, noting that its initial presence was reported in June 2024 in cities like Portland, Oregon, and Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. By September of the same year, it was identified in nearly every state that provided drug samples for analysis to the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). The mystery surrounding BTMPS continues to deepen as experts seek to understand its role and effects within the context of illicit drug use. As the drug landscape evolves, the inclusion of such unexpected substances raises significant concerns about safety and regulation.
