The anticipation surrounding the Dream Chaser space plane, developed by Sierra Space, continues to grow, yet the timeline for its launch remains uncertain. Experts now suggest that a flight won't occur this year. Having been in development for over two decades, the Dream Chaser has garnered a dedicated fanbase, largely due to its winged design reminiscent of the celebrated Space Shuttle. During a recent press briefing, Dana Weigel, the program manager for the International Space Station at NASA, addressed inquiries about the launch schedule. Weigel's remarks were cautious, stating, "We will be ready for them when they're ready to fly." This came after the successful launch of NASA's Crew-11 mission, highlighting the ongoing preparations for the Dream Chaser. Weigel provided insights into the current status of Dream Chaser, noting that it is in the final assembly phase. "They're doing a lot of tests, and they're engaging in what I call final certification work," she explained. A significant focus is on software certification, which involves comprehensive testing of all software functions to ensure reliability and safety. This approach reflects lessons learned from Boeing's Starliner, which faced severe software issues during its initial flight in December 2019. Additionally, Sierra Space is working diligently to certify the propulsion system of the Dream Chaser. The craft is equipped with over two dozen small rocket engines designed for precision control and substantial orbital adjustments. Notably, these engines utilize a combination of kerosene and hydrogen peroxide as propellants, diverging from the more hazardous hypergolic propellants typically used in space missions. The journey to the Dream Chaser’s launch continues, as both NASA and Sierra Space prioritize safety and efficiency in their preparations.
