Mega IPOs: SpaceX, OpenAI, Anthropic are headed for the market; is there room for anyone else?

Elon Musk's SpaceX is preparing for what could be a record-breaking IPO, raising fresh concerns about the implications of several major listings on an already delicate market. The aerospace company has filed confidentially with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and is aiming for a staggering valuation of approximately $1.75 trillion, hoping to secure up to $75 billion in its offering. If successful, this could surpass the previous record set by Saudi Aramco's $29 billion listing, marking a pivotal moment for venture capital, according to PitchBook. However, this anticipated surge in IPO activity may come at a significant cost. Despite hopes for a strong recovery in the 2026 IPO market following a sluggish start in 2025, the current landscape is characterized by a lack of major listings, leaving the market largely dominated by three key players: SpaceX, OpenAI, and Anthropic. These companies are set to potentially reshape market liquidity with their massive IPOs. PitchBook estimates that SpaceX could raise between $50 billion and $75 billion, while OpenAI and Anthropic—also planning to go public later this year—could contribute an additional $50 billion combined. This concentration of capital might squeeze out opportunities for smaller companies looking to enter the market, as noted by PitchBook. The valuation landscape is staggering. SpaceX's recent merger with xAI has set its value at roughly $1.25 trillion, while OpenAI and Anthropic are estimated at around $840 billion and $330 billion, respectively. If all three proceed with their IPOs, they could collectively create more value than all U.S. VC-backed IPOs since 2000, which raises concerns about the capacity of underwriters and the appetite of public investors for lesser-known offerings. As the venture capital sector faces what PitchBook describes as an “extended liquidity drought,” the timing of these mega IPOs is crucial. While they offer the potential for a significant windfall for early investors, they may also lead to a concentration of returns among a select group of large stakeholders. This could have unpredictable effects on the broader market. The report suggests that if these IPOs dominate market attention, the window for additional listings may not open until 2027, prolonging the current liquidity challenges. The existing IPO pipeline appears fragile, with few companies, apart from a small number of names like Discord and Cerebras, actively pursuing public offerings. The performance of previous IPOs complicates the situation further. In 2025, 17 unicorns went public, but only three managed to retain valuations above their previous private peak, raising the stakes for SpaceX and its contemporaries. PitchBook describes this moment as a critical juncture. Successful listings could stimulate a wave of new IPOs, injecting billions into the market and reinforcing AI's role in venture capital. Conversely, if these mega IPOs underperform, it could freeze the market, delaying liquidity for many potential listings. With SpaceX's impending IPO, the market may be on the cusp of a long-awaited turnaround. Yet, whether this leads to widespread recovery or further constrains the market will ultimately depend on investor reception of these monumental offerings.
