Here's why software engineering legend Kent Beck says coders need to finally embrace people skills

In today's technology landscape, software engineers are highly sought after, yet they find themselves increasingly vulnerable amid the AI revolution. Prominent software engineer Kent Beck recently addressed this issue in an episode of "The Pragmatic Engineer," offering a candid perspective on the challenges facing those in the field. Beck highlighted a significant concern: many software engineers often lack essential interpersonal skills. He pointed out that, despite their technical prowess, they may struggle with emotional regulation and empathy. "We're oftentimes more direct than other people can easily handle," he remarked, identifying some of the more challenging traits that can hinder collaboration. As artificial intelligence continues to reshape the industry, the demand for engineers to possess these softer skills has never been greater. With AI increasingly capable of writing code, companies are shifting their expectations. Engineers are now expected to oversee, guide, and manage AI-generated work rather than solely focusing on writing every line of code themselves. This shift has led to the emergence of vibecoding—a trend allowing experienced developers to produce prototypes faster while empowering non-coders to bring their ideas to life. As the lines blur between engineering and product development, the role of software engineers is evolving. Amol Avasare, head of growth at Anthropic, noted that engineers utilizing tools like Claude Code have seen their productivity surge by two to three times. This evolution is placing additional demands on product managers and designers. As a result, engineers are increasingly being called upon to take on product management responsibilities, which necessitates greater interaction with colleagues. In smaller projects, for instance, Anthropic is encouraging engineers to act as "mini PMs," balancing coding tasks with stakeholder coordination and cross-functional collaboration. Beck humorously described the need for programmers to cultivate people skills as a "cosmic practical joke." He explained that while many begin their coding journey believing technical knowledge is all they need, they soon discover that their impact is limited by their ability to communicate effectively and empathize with others.
