President Donald Trump's ambitious proposal for the Golden Dome missile defense system has raised eyebrows due to its staggering projected costs. Estimates suggest that the design, deployment, and maintenance of this initiative could run into several hundred billion dollars over multiple decades. Although some lawmakers express concern over these financial implications, the Republican-led Congress has already allocated $25 billion as an initial investment in missile-defense technologies. The White House previously indicated that the Golden Dome program would require $175 billion over a span of three years. However, a recent report from a center-right think tank challenges this estimate, asserting that the funding is insufficient to create the comprehensive multi-layer defense shield envisioned in Trump's January executive order. Moreover, experts believe that the full implementation of the Golden Dome's capabilities will extend well beyond the initial three-year timeline. Todd Harrison, a senior fellow at the American Enterprise Institute, expressed that the funding level currently proposed falls drastically short of the president's promises, leading to a significant disparity between expectations and reality. The administration has outlined that the Golden Dome is intended to protect the U.S. from various aerial threats, including ballistic missiles, hypersonic projectiles, advanced cruise missiles, and other emerging aerial attacks like drones. In his paper titled "Build Your Own Golden Dome," Harrison offers insights into the financial implications, decisions, and trade-offs the Pentagon must navigate as it outlines the specifics of this missile defense initiative. He emphasizes that the total cost of the program will depend on several factors, including the extent of geographic coverage, the types and quantities of threats it aims to counter, and the anticipated resilience of the system. Harrison notes that even minor adjustments in these parameters could result in cost fluctuations amounting to hundreds of billions of dollars.
