
In recent sustainability reports released by Google and Amazon, alarming figures reveal the environmental toll of the tech giants' growing reliance on artificial intelligence. Both companies are striving to achieve net-zero carbon emissions in the coming years, yet their latest data indicates that this goal is becoming increasingly elusive. Google has reported a staggering 25% increase in total carbon emissions compared to last year, while Amazon's emissions have risen by 16%. While neither company explicitly attributes this rise to AI, both acknowledge a significant uptick in energy consumption linked to AI advancements. The reports highlight a critical metric: carbon intensity, which measures pollution generated per dollar of revenue. This metric has been pivotal in international climate negotiations, and now it underscores the challenges facing these corporations. Despite showcasing AI's potential environmental benefits, both companies seem to be struggling with the reality of their carbon footprints. Delving deeper into the data reveals that both Amazon and Google have managed to keep carbon emissions from energy purchases relatively stable, thanks to long-term investments in renewable energy. However, the escalating demands of AI are pushing them towards fossil fuel reliance, particularly as they invest heavily in natural gas power to meet energy needs. Much of the increasing carbon footprint can be attributed to Scope 3 emissions, which encompass pollution from sources outside direct corporate control, such as product manufacturing and usage. For Google, substantial growth in Scope 3 emissions—doubling since 2019—suggests that data centers are significant contributors to their environmental impact. Meanwhile, Amazon's emissions spike is largely due to capital goods and energy use, with data centers playing a crucial role. Amazon's report notes that to satisfy customer demand, the company has expanded data center capacity more than any other firm, adding over 1.2 gigawatts in just the fourth quarter of 2025. This rapid expansion complicates their decarbonization efforts. Historically, the largest carbon contributions stemmed from office energy use and smaller data centers. However, as AI technology advances, the reliance on renewable energy is diminishing. The construction and operation of data centers, which heavily rely on carbon-intensive materials like steel and cement, further exacerbate the situation. Additionally, semiconductor manufacturing, essential for AI, involves energy-intensive processes that often depend on fossil fuels. Despite these mounting challenges, there are paths forward. To meet their net-zero commitments, both Google and Amazon must accelerate their investments in renewable energy, explore innovative low-carbon construction methods, and purchase significant amounts of carbon removal credits. Although the road ahead is fraught with difficulties, the situation is not insurmountable, and the responsibility lies with these tech leaders to adapt and innovate.
