The computer science dream has become a nightmare

The once-promising pathway to success through computer science has turned into a daunting challenge for recent graduates. A study from the Federal Reserve Bank of New York reveals that unemployment rates for fresh computer science graduates have soared to between 6.1% and 7.5%. This figure is starkly higher than the unemployment rates faced by graduates in fields like biology and art history. The New York Times has shed light on the troubling experiences of these graduates, revealing individual stories that underscore the severity of the situation. Take, for instance, Manasi Mishra, a 21-year-old who graduated from Purdue University with expectations of landing a lucrative job. Despite her hopes for a six-figure starting salary, she received only one interview opportunity — at Chipotle — and did not secure the position. Similarly, Zach Taylor, who graduated from Oregon State in 2023, has faced an uphill battle in his job search. He has submitted nearly 6,000 applications but has only managed to get 13 interviews, with no job offers to show for his efforts. To compound his frustration, he was even turned down by McDonald's due to a perceived lack of experience. Many graduates attribute their struggles to the rise of AI programming, which is reportedly replacing entry-level positions. Major companies like Amazon, Meta, and Microsoft are also implementing significant layoffs, further squeezing the job market. Many students feel ensnared in an 'AI doom loop,' where they use AI tools to apply for numerous positions, only to be auto-rejected by companies utilizing AI for rapid screening. Fortunately, after much perseverance, Mishra finally secured a position through a cold application — though it is not in the field of software engineering. Her story reflects a glimmer of hope amid a landscape that has become increasingly challenging for new entrants into the tech workforce.
