Our survey about vibe coding became a vent session for the AI haters

In a recent discussion at Anthropic's developer conference, Boris Cherny, the creator of Claude Code, expressed his frustration with the term "vibe coding." This term has emerged as a popular way to describe the process of instructing AI to generate code. To explore alternative names, Business Insider conducted a survey inviting feedback from readers. The results were telling, with responses evenly split between those who had engaged in vibe coding recently and those who had not. However, the survey quickly turned into a platform for critics of the technology, revealing a significant undercurrent of skepticism and concern about the future of jobs in the AI landscape. The most common suggestion for a new term was simply "slop," which has gained traction as the public navigates the implications of generative AI on various media. Additional suggestions included creative alternatives like "slopcoding," "slopmaxxing," and even "Slop as a Service (SaaS)." While some respondents took a humorous approach, others were more serious, proposing terms like "vulnerability creation" to highlight the cybersecurity risks associated with AI-generated code. Some comments reflected fears over job displacement, with terms like "job destruction" and "unemployment" surfacing as concerns among the community. Despite the prevalence of negative sentiments, there were also constructive suggestions such as "prompt coding," "autocode," and "agentic engineering." Cherny acknowledged these terms, particularly favoring "autocoding." However, he noted that none of the proposed names seemed to resonate perfectly as a replacement for the original term. One participant shared their own experience using Claude Code for security auditing in their homelab, dubbing the process "Claudits." They highlighted the ambiguity of the term "vibe coding," noting that it could refer to various activities including building, designing, and cleaning. This may partly explain the difficulty in finding a universally accepted alternative, as "vibe" has become a catch-all descriptor in the tech community.
