AI helps young workers 'mature' faster by automating grunt work, founder says, amid youth job crisis

Orlando Bravo, the billionaire founder of Thoma Bravo, a software-focused private equity firm, recently shared insights on how artificial intelligence (AI) is revolutionizing the responsibilities of junior associates. Speaking with CNBC at the SuperReturn conference in Berlin, Bravo emphasized that AI is set to relieve young workers from mundane tasks, enabling them to develop more meaningful skills at a quicker pace. As the firm integrates AI tools, Bravo noted that junior associates will engage in more significant aspects of investing, moving away from tedious tasks like creating models and comparables. "They are spending much less time on basic tasks and are instead focusing on broader business strategies and operations," he explained. This shift not only enhances their professional growth but also allows them to forge valuable relationships with business leaders. The remarks come at a time when youth unemployment is a pressing issue, particularly in the U.K., where data indicates that over a million young individuals are currently out of work or not pursuing education or training. With a tightening job market in both the U.S. and U.K., exacerbated by significant layoffs and the increasing adoption of AI, entry-level positions are becoming scarce. Despite the concerns surrounding AI's impact on job availability, Bravo remains optimistic about its potential to create opportunities for young professionals. He argued that if the role of an associate is strictly defined by basic tasks, it may become redundant; however, the evolving nature of these positions now requires more interpersonal engagement and strategic thinking. In a notable shift in his three-decade career in private equity, Bravo mentioned an increased need for hiring due to the additional work generated by AI. While some experts voice apprehension about job displacement, Bravo pointed out that the technology not only facilitates efficiency but also fosters growth in junior roles. Recent trends show a mixed picture regarding AI and employment. Major companies, including Salesforce and Microsoft, have announced job cuts attributed to automation, leading to over 50,000 layoffs in the U.S. in 2025 alone. Conversely, the U.K.'s technology secretary, Liz Kendall, highlighted governmental initiatives aimed at upskilling young workers in AI, offering free courses to enhance their employability. She stated, "We're committed to upskilling 10 million workers by 2030, and evidence shows that those with AI skills can earn up to 25% more." In this rapidly evolving landscape, Kendall's message is clear: acquiring AI skills is essential for securing better job prospects, and the government is dedicated to facilitating this shift for the younger workforce.
