A wave of innovative startups is reshaping the social networking landscape, capturing the attention of both users and investors alike. As niche social platforms gain popularity, the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) is heralding a new era for consumer-focused internet ventures. Vanessa Larco, a former partner at NEA and the founder of a new venture firm called Premise, emphasizes the potential of consumer-driven AI startups. She is particularly interested in companies like Midjourney, a generative AI image creator, Tolan, an AI companion platform, and Sitch, an AI-powered dating application. Although Larco is not an investor in Midjourney or Tolan, she does support Sitch as an angel investor. For many entrepreneurs, incorporating AI into their pitches has become essential. Paul Warren, CEO of the book community platform Margins, notes that significant funding in consumer spaces often hinges on a strong AI narrative. Nonetheless, venture capitalists are also keen on startups that foster dedicated communities within specific niches, be it in books, dining, or fashion. Warren observes a trend where users are gravitating towards smaller, more intimate platforms rather than larger, generalized ones. In a recent inquiry, nine venture capitalists shared their insights on promising consumer social tech startups to watch in 2025. They pointed to emerging AI-driven platforms with social features, niche-oriented networks, and applications designed to encourage real-life connections. One standout is Swsh, a photo-sharing app aimed at Generation Z, which is drawing investor interest. VCs Rhian Horton from Stellation Capital—who has invested in Swsh—along with Derek Chu of FirstMark Capital and TJ Taylor from Hobart Ventures, noted its potential. Founded in 2022 by Alexandra Debow, Weilyn Chong, and Nathan Ahn, Swsh collaborates with major music festivals like Rolling Loud and EDC Vegas, allowing users to share and discover event photos using AI technology. To date, the startup has secured $3 million in funding. Another noteworthy app, Status, leverages AI to create a social media experience featuring fictional characters and has garnered attention from VCs such as Chu and Amber Atherton at Patron. Co-founded by Fai Nur, Amit Bhatnagar, Pritesh Kadiwala, and Blossom Okonkwo, Status emerged from Y Combinator and was launched in 2025, amassing over 2.5 million users. Atherton emphasizes that many founders are now blending real-life interactions with AI-driven agents in their social networks. Observing the gaming habits of younger generations, she predicts that the future of social platforms will increasingly resemble gaming experiences. This shift underscores the evolving landscape of social networking, where AI plays a pivotal role in user engagement and community building.
