No “AI jobs bloodbath” as AI permeates all IT work over the next 5 years

According to recent insights from Gartner, the landscape of information technology is set for a dramatic transformation over the next five years, with artificial intelligence becoming an integral part of every IT role. During a keynote presentation at Gartner's IT Symposium in Gold Coast, Australia, analysts Alicia Mullery and Daryl Plummer shared their forecasts, emphasizing that by 2030, AI will be a fundamental element in all IT operations. Currently, a significant portion of IT work—approximately 81 percent—is performed without the aid of AI. However, Gartner predicts that this will shift dramatically, with bots expected to take over a quarter of IT tasks entirely and human workers increasingly relying on AI to complete the remaining 75 percent of their responsibilities. This shift raises concerns among skeptics who fear potential job losses due to automation, a sentiment that is prevalent across various sectors, including recruiting, journalism, customer service, and social media. Despite these concerns, Gartner's analysts do not foresee a catastrophic job loss scenario in the IT sector. Presently, AI-related job losses account for a mere 1 percent of total layoffs, suggesting that while AI will indeed impact the job market, the situation is more nuanced than a widespread 'AI jobs bloodbath.' Plummer and Mullery highlighted that while AI may lead to the reduction of entry-level positions within IT, this trend reflects a broader pattern already observable in the labor market. Data from Revelio Labs indicates that entry-level jobs highly exposed to AI have already seen a decline of over 40 percent from January 2023 to July 2025. In a related forecast, Goldman Sachs Research warned that widespread AI adoption could lead to the displacement of 6 to 7 percent of the U.S. workforce. However, the research also pointed out that such impacts are expected to be temporary, as the economy adapts and new job opportunities arise. As organizations continue to navigate this evolving landscape, familiarity with AI will become essential for IT professionals aiming to thrive in the future job market.
