How is EV technology being accepted by the aftermarket?

With the expiration of federal clean vehicle tax credits in September, the electric vehicle (EV) sector finds itself at a pivotal moment. This situation has been brewing since the Trump administration took office, creating a unique scenario in automotive history. While some segments of the industry are aggressively pursuing EV advancements, others are scaling back, leaving consumers uncertain about the future of electrification in the coming years. To understand the implications for the aftermarket industry, which typically thrives on OEM innovations, I attended the Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA) tradeshow in Las Vegas. I spoke with industry leaders, including SEMA's CEO Mike Spagnola and senior vice president Karen Bailey-Chapman, to grasp their perspectives on EV technology's trajectory. Bailey-Chapman emphasized that the organization resists being dictated to, noting that proposed EV mandates could have jeopardized a significant portion of their industry. “Thirty-three percent of our industry would’ve been wiped out had EV mandates continued,” she stated, referencing the stringent federal fuel efficiency regulations that could have forced automakers to produce more EVs or face hefty fines. Following the Trump administration's decision to revoke these targets, SEMA's stance has evolved to embrace all vehicle technologies. The organization is increasingly engaged in political advocacy to shape a favorable environment for its members. They are particularly focused on limiting the authority of the California Air Resources Board (CARB), which regulates air quality in California. As the industry navigates these turbulent waters, SEMA's commitment to supporting diverse automotive technologies remains steadfast, striving for a balanced approach that accommodates all types of vehicles on the road.
